Story of two siblings reintegrated from an orphanage in Myanmar through the ACCIR Kinnected Program
A special documentary episode of To the Contrary explores the trend away from orphanages and towards family reunification. Host Bonnie Erbé travels to Ethiopia to explore why parents give up their children. She reports on the research showing how orphanages jeopardize children's psychological and mental well-being.
This piece follows the story of a young boy called Lakshan, who through a very traumatic event lost his father at a young age. Through the Home of Hope, run by ACCI field worker Alison Atkinson, Lakshan is being supported to return to school, and most importantly to return to living with his mother and sister, supported in their community. Alison has been based in Sri Lanka for many years, and together with her husband Narel and daughter Sonja, is impacting a great number of families throughout Colombo.
Being placed in an orphanage leads to institutionalisation for many children around the world, and can have very negative effects on the development of children. Watch this interview with Ou, as she shares her experience growing up in Cambodia.
